SPRINGFIELD - Illinois will institute a 10-day tax holiday on school supplies, and working families and teachers can expect to have reduced shopping costs ahead of the upcoming school year, thanks to support from State Senator Rachel Ventura.
“Affordability remains top of mind for our residents, especially when they are feeling the impacts on their everyday lives,” said Ventura (D-Joliet). “This effort alleviates the financial burden during one of the most important times of the year for many families: back-to-school season.”
Included in Senate Bill 3019 is a temporary reduction in the Illinois sales tax rate on certain school-related purchases from 6.25% to 1.25%. The tax holiday ensures families across the state can purchase much-needed items before the 2026-27 academic year.
“As a mom, I know how important it is to set our children up for success at the start of each academic year,” said Ventura. “Whether it is new clothes or supplies, this back-to-school holiday will guarantee more children can get the tools they need to succeed in the classroom.”
The back-to-school sales tax holiday will be in place Aug. 7-16. Eligible items include clothing and shoes under $125, and school supplies such as binders, folders, backpacks, lunchboxes, calculators and writing supplies without a dollar cap.
