JOLIET — State Senator Rachel Ventura recently announced starting this month, Southern Illinois University is hosting its Cycle Rider Safety Training Program motorcycle classes on a limited basis, including at Joliet Junior College.
“We are excited to see this popular safety training program for new motorcyclists come back to Will County,” said Ventura (D-Joliet). “By offering these courses, and encouraging drivers to see motorcycles on the road and – in turn – reducing motorcycle crashes, we can help prevent loss of life and give the best safety training available to new riders.”
The Illinois Department of Transportation’s Cycle Rider Safety Training Program, which was established in 1976, offers motorcycle-riding skills at three levels, from novice users and intermediate operators as well as advanced techniques for seasoned riders.
Classes are open to licensed drivers 16 and older. Successful graduates who are 18 and older have the opportunity to waive the riding and written portions of the Illinois motorcycle license exam.
Benefits of CRSTP include:
- All courses are free to any Illinois resident 16 or older
- Teaches all riders how to safely and confidently operate a motorcycle
- Helps riders manage their risk and increase skills through riding and classroom instruction
- Sharpens riders’ knowledge and riding skills to become better, safer motorcycle riders
- Allows successful program graduates (18 or older) to waive the riding and written portions of the Illinois motorcycle license test
- Qualifies some graduates for insurance discounts
“Class spots are limited, so I encourage anyone interested to apply as soon as possible,” said Ventura. “I am encouraged by the program’s revival and will push for more of these classes to happen for the area.”
The cycle rider-training program is funded through a surcharge on motorcycle registrations in Illinois. A $20 refundable fee is required to register and helps support the program. For more information on the program, visit IDOT’s program page or SIU’s Motorcycle Rider Program page.
