SPRINGFIELD – State Senator Rachel Ventura, a staunch advocate for humane criminal justice reform as well as improving diversity, transparency and equality in the state, has been appointed to serve as chair of the Senate Human Rights Committee for the 104th General Assembly.

“Throughout my career, I have remained steadfast in improving the lives of Illinoisans through initiatives in housing, mental health access, economic opportunities and environmental sustainability — all of which are integral to ensuring humans have access to a safe and healthy planet,” said Ventura (D-Joliet). “It is an honor to be entrusted with chairing the Human Rights Committee. I am deeply committed to advancing policies that address systemic inequities, including those rooted in socioeconomic disparities, while upholding the dignity of every individual. Illinois serves as a beacon of hope in the Midwest, and I aim to enhance transparency and fairness for all in this new role.”

The Senate Human Rights Committee plays a crucial role in addressing issues related to civil rights, social justice and anti-discrimination measures within the state. As chair, Ventura will lead efforts to evaluate proposed legislation and collaborate with advocacy groups and stakeholders to tackle pressing challenges.

Since joining the Illinois Senate, Ventura has been a vocal advocate for marginalized communities, championing and supporting measures related to workers’ rights, gender equity, mental health access and racial justice. Her legislative accomplishments include reforms in criminal justice, tenant rights and environmental protection.

“I am committed to addressing systemic inequities in housing, health care and the rights of vulnerable populations, including children,” Ventura stated. “In uncertain times, it is imperative to affirm our collective belief in the principles of freedom, justice and peace. This starts with protecting our right to exist. I will work tirelessly to ensure these values are reflected in the legislation passed by this committee.”

Ventura served as vice chair of the Senate Special Committee on Pensions during the 103rd General Assembly. She will lead the Human Rights Committee throughout the 104th General Assembly.
